Fostering Sustainability

George Brown College, Toronto, Ontario

Fostering Sustainability is working with GeorgeBrownCollege to implement its environmental sustainability “Green Plan”.  The goal of the Green Plan is to reduce the College’s overall ecological footprint. It also includes plans for integrating environmental sustainability principles into the curriculum.

This project began with Fostering Sustainability carrying out an environmental review of the College’s facilities and operations to determine baseline data and benchmarks in terms of the current state of the greening.  Based on results of this review, the environmental sustainability program and action plan (Green Plan) was developed for the College that promotes the use of environmentally sound management practices campus wide.

The Green Plan sets priorities and goals, in the following areas: Energy Management and Climate Change; Water Consumption; Waste Management and Minimization; Green Purchasing and Materials Selection; Food Services and Campus Shops; Site Management and Landscaping; Transportation, Parking and Mobility; Academics and Curriculum.

Fostering Sustainability is now working closely with the College’s Green Team to develop and implement the College’s Green Plan.  The mandate of the Green Team is to align college-wide “green” initiatives with the college’s strategic plan, to ensure that the college moves towards more sustainable campus practices and to provide a forum to leverage extra curricular activities related to sustainability with academic offerings.

St. Andrew’s College, Aurora, Ontario

Fostering Sustainability is working with St. Andrew’s College (SAC) to develop an Environmental Plan that will include short, medium and long-term goals for making “St. Andrew’s College the greenest place possible”.

Working with an Environmental Task Force, Fostering Sustainability is helping SAC to assess costs and benefits of several strategies for greening of the School.  The final Environmental Plan will cover all aspects of the School’s operations and school life, including greening of facilities and operations, giving consideration to the environment in student and residential life, and integration of environmental sustainability issues into the curriculum.

As part of the process, Fostering Sustainability is helping SAC to “jump-start” environmental initiatives with immediate benefits and short-term pay-backs, such as instituting a Lug-A-Mug program, food waste composting, energy retrofit and water conservation projects, and creating a new Middle School Green Team.  The Environmental Plan builds on the momentum of student projects and green initiatives such as banning plastic water bottles on campus, instituting a no-idling policy, using recycled paper and banning pesticides on the grounds.

The goal of the Environmental Plan is that everyone in the school community will become one of “St. Andrew’s Green Environmentalists”, in spirit and by modeling a campus-wide ethic of environmental citizenship.  By doing so, SAC aims to inspire students to demonstrate leadership in terms of ecological citizenship and graduate to become agents of change in society’s transition to a sustainable future.
